Launched in February 2023, JDSSI is dedicated to publishing high-quality original research in the fields of design service, social innovation, and design culture.
Publication Model and Access
JDSSI employs a rigorous double-blind peer-review process and publishes all articles under a Gold Open Access model.
Peer Review Process:All submissions undergo a strict double-blind peer review. Authors’ identities are anonymized to reviewers, and reviewers’ identities are anonymized to authors. At least two expert reviewers independently evaluate each manuscript. Editorial decisions are based solely on scholarly merit, originality, and relevance to the journal’s scope.
JDSSI is published quarterly (four issues per year) in both print and online formats. All articles are licensed under the Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial-NoDerivatives 4.0 International License (CC BY-NC-ND 4.0). Copyright remains with the author(s), while the journal is published by Michelangelo Scholar Publishing Limited (MSPL).
JDSSI operates on a sustainable Open Access model and charges an Article Processing Charge (APC) of USD 500 per accepted article. This fee is transparently disclosed on the journal website and helps cover costs associated with peer review, editorial management, typesetting, DOI registration, online hosting, and long-term platform maintenance.
Waivers and Discounts
- Full or partial APC waivers are available for authors from low-income and lower-middle-income countries, as well as for early-career researchers and student authors.
- Waivers are granted on a transparent, case-by-case basis according to clearly published criteria.
- Discounted APC may also be offered to authors affiliated with academic institutions in middle-income regions.
This waiver and discount policy aims to ensure equitable access for researchers worldwide.:

Mission and Vision
Mission
JDSSI advances the fields of design service and social innovation by publishing rigorous research, promoting practical applications, and fostering interdisciplinary collaboration. The journal provides a platform for knowledge dissemination that empowers communities and supports sustainable development.
Our mission is built on three core pillars:
- Bridging theory and practice: Connecting conceptual insights with real-world applications in design service and social innovation.
- Methodological innovation: Encouraging novel approaches that enhance the effectiveness and societal impact of design interventions.
- Global dialogue: Promoting collaboration and exchange among scholars, practitioners, and community stakeholders across the world.
JDSSI maintains high standards of scholarly rigor while remaining accessible and relevant to both researchers and practitioners. Through rigorous double-blind peer review and careful editorial oversight, the journal supports established scholars as well as emerging voices in the field.
Vision
The Journal of Design Service and Social Innovation (JDSSI) aims to advance research in design and social innovation by providing a platform for the publication of peer-reviewed scholarly work. JDSSI publishes research that examines the role of design in addressing social challenges, improving service systems, and supporting sustainable and inclusive development.
JDSSI facilitates academic exchange by encouraging interdisciplinary research that draws on perspectives from design, the social sciences, and related fields. It provides a venue for studies that address both theoretical and applied aspects of design in a range of social and cultural contexts.
We also support the development of an international research community by encouraging contributions from scholars and practitioners across different disciplines and geographic regions. Through this approach, JDSSI contributes to ongoing academic discussions on design, innovation, and their relevance to contemporary social issues.
