DH is published semi-annually in both print and online formats. DH is an interdisciplinary scholarly journal dedicated to the publication of high-quality original design research, focusing on innovative theories grounded in design practice and their historical development. The journal primarily examines the evolution and development of design objects within their historical and stylistic contexts, covering a wide scope that includes the history of various design fields such as architecture, fashion, crafts, interior design, textiles, graphic design, industrial design, and product design.
The journal addresses design innovation in multidisciplinary fields for social services, including design service and assessment, social innovation theory and practice, and design as a driving strategy for social and cultural construction. DH aims to share innovative design ideas and solutions, explore issues such as sustainable design and consumer services, and promote design for harmonious social development and multicultural exchange.

DH employs a rigorous double-blind peer-review process and publishes original research articles under an open-access model. DH welcomes submissions from researchers across all disciplinary perspectives, including design, sociology, education, public health, engineering, anthropology, cultural studies, and business.
DH publishes the following types of contributions:
- Research Articles: Original research manuscripts of over 8,000 words on all aspects of design history, offering new insights, methodologies, or theoretical frameworks.
- Literature Reviews: Comprehensive, critical assessments of existing scholarship on topics within the journal’s scope, over 10,000 words.
- Book Reviews: Scholarly evaluations of recently published books relevant to design history and related disciplines, over 5,000 words.
- Special Topics: Themed collections addressing emergent themes, methodological innovations, or underexplored geographic contexts, comprising 6–8 research articles with an editorial introduction.
- Exhibition Reviews: Critical reviews (2,000–2,500 words) of significant design exhibitions, contextualizing them within broader currents in design historical scholarship.
